Notice the Hook Set (Or Go Home With a Sob Story)
Notice the Hook Set (Or Go Home With a Sob Story)
If you've never fished for crappie, you might hear "notice the hook set" and picture something dramatic — a rod bending in half, a reel screaming, the whole Hollywood moment. Bless your heart. Crappie don't work like that.
Crappie have what old-timers call a "papermouth" — soft, delicate, and about as forgiving as tissue paper in a rainstorm. They don't smash a jig, they tap it. Once. Maybe twice if you're lucky. Blink, scratch your nose, or get distracted arguing with your kid about who's driving the boat next, and that fish is gone, jig and all, laughing at you from somewhere down below.
We've lost count of how many "biggest fish of the day" stories in the Slab Co. house end with "...and then I didn't notice the hook set." It's become a running joke — half self-deprecating, half genuine warning to anyone new to the boat. Notice the hook set, or you'll be the one telling that story at the landing while everyone else shows off their bucket.
So when it came time to make a shirt that wasn't covered in a giant fish graphic, this phrase was the obvious pick. It's quiet, it's a little inside-baseball, and if you know, you know. Wear it and you'll get a nod from the right people — the ones who've felt that tiny tap and set the hook just in time.
And if you're newer to crappie fishing: consider this your official warning. Watch your line. Feel for the tap. Notice the hook set.
Tight lines, The Slab Co.
